Chapter Twenty-Eight
That one little chat convinced Xel that Civan might actually be the strongest man he'd ever met. The compassion catalyst didn't hold back. Not when he loved, and it seemed not even when he fought. Granted, that hadn't actually been a fight, but it could've been. Xel knew that if he'd tried to ignore what Civan was saying, it definitely would've turned ugly.
Yet as they walked the rest of the way to the glassmaker, he realized something else. All his life, Xel had been the strong one. He'd taken care of Treb, their army, and everything else. He couldn't remember the last time someone had been there to hold him up. But Civan had been there this whole time, loyally serving in his army. So close, and yet so very far away.
He didn't say anything else until they were at the shop. Mostly, because Xel wasn't sure if he'd ruin what little bit of understanding he'd just gained. To him, Civan was a complete enigma. The best part was that Jade understood the man so easily. Then again, there might be something to that split soul theory, because Civan really was her perfect complement.
"This is it," Xel said as he opened the front door, letting Civan enter first.
Like before, they both paused just inside to let their eyes adjust. Master Lefret didn't have that problem. "Xel!" he called out. "And who is your friend today? That looks like the Black Mage's catalyst."
"Civan," he said before Xel could answer, holding out his hand in greeting.
"My partner," Xel told him.
Lefret smiled. "Ah, one of those four. Well, Civan, what do you think about red?"
"Red?"
"Oh yes," Lefret bragged, gesturing toward a table at the side. "I told the mages that I'd make your glasses and dishes, and Kevik said you have your own place now." He paused. "And it sounds like there may be a fifth?"
"No," Xel said, his tone making it clear that wasn't up for debate. "My catalyst has taken an interest in the girl, but it's fleeting."
"I see. Well, here's the glass."
Spread out on a shelf along the wall was a complete set of red glassware. Some for wine, water, and even delicate cups for tea. Then there were the plates and bowls. All of it was red. The color was so vivid it looked like it had been painted, but the striations in the pattern proved it had been melted into the glass before the pieces were blown - or however they made things like this.
"That's nice," Civan said, sounding a little awed.
Xel leaned closer. "Think she'll like the red?"
"Yeah. I'm pretty sure it's her favorite color."
"Good," Xel said, then he looked at Lefret. "And I need more baubles. How are you doing on charcoal?"
"I've almost used it all, actually," Lefret admitted. "If you wouldn't mind? I know she usually makes it, but..."
"Civan?" Xel said, tilting his head for the man to follow. Lefret, however, headed to the other side, aiming for where the bubbles and bits were kept.
